What Our Pets Teach Us

Video:
We have a fun group here at Verbal Ink, including a couple of four legged friends who like to check up on us or raid our trash cans for food. We found this great video with other pet owners sharing what they've learned from their furry friends. Enjoy!

Change of Scenery

The Verbal Ink Crew had the opportunity to go to Lake Tahoe for our retreat. This was surely a site we're not used to seeing every day in Santa Monica!

Why Are You Thankful?

Pause.

For 15 seconds, think about everything for which you're grateful.

Notice a difference? :)

Happiness Is Contagious

Came across this quote this morning from Sydney Smith which I thought was a great reminder how even our smallest actions can have a huge ripple effect.

"Try to make at least one person happy every day, and then in ten years you may have made three thousand, six hundred, and fifty persons happy, or brightened a small town . . . "

What are some simple things you do each day to make other people happy?

Bully

Video:
There's been a lot of controversy around a film coming out by The Weinstein Company about bullying, a huge issue in our country today, particularly in the age of social media. The film has been given an R rating which will preclude many of those who could most benefit from seeing it without a parent or guardian. What do you think? Should the MPAA lower the rating because of the mission of the film?

Wisdom 2.0

I had the opportunity to attend Wisdom 2.0 again this year which brings together some of the leading innovators in the tech space along with wisdom teachers from many different traditions. It makes for a fascinating discussion around how do we live life being present vs. coasting by on autopilot as our gadgets control us.

Lee Rainie with Pew Research Center presented some interesting statistics from one of their most recent surveys:

56% of people have unfriended someone on a social network.

50% of the US population uses apps and 42% of those people use it to beat boredom.

79% of people are confused by gadgets.

56% of people are confused by truth (so much information to process, how does one know what is really true).

His biggest message was that people are almost uniformly grateful for how technology has indeed enhanced their lives. Yet the flip side of the coin is that we're still trying to figure out how to manage it.

What have you done in your own life that helps you strike this balance?
